I’m sure that most of the Malaysians are aware that Maxis has already brought the iPhone 3G into the Malaysia market. Many of us were really excited when the rumors spreads out. I, myself was even planning to get one before the Maxis iPhone plans rip off plans were out.
Thinking that it might be just like the Singapore call plans, I’ve even decided to get the RM 250 monthly commitment package. Supposedly when it comes to free-phones-with-contract kind of plans, we’re to expect something like cheaper-than-market price for the iPhone 3G.

Unfortunately, Maxis Malaysia does NOT work that way. Being one of the leading mobile service provider in Malaysia, Maxis has always spend their time planning ways to rip off their users. I do not understand or get the idea how their iPhone 3G plans are going to benefits any of the potential/current customers. Do they really thinks that Malaysian consumers are stupid?
I’m always not good when it comes to writing facts, so I might as well go straight to the point from this paragraph onwards with one simple question. Why should you be locked with Maxis contract after paying so much for the iPhone 3G?
I don’t see how their 24months call plans rip off plan gives you a free iPhone 3G when you have to spend RM 9,000 on the call plans alone and then another RM 2,000 for advance payment. Hello? They’re making us to sign a contract for 24 months and we were trying to trust them. In return, they do not trust you at all by making you to cough up another RM 2,000 as their insurance.
The worst part, they did not provide you unlimited data package. Instead, you need to pay another extra RM 99 for their unlimited data access. Most of us should know that iPhone 3G would need slightly more data transfer since it’s so media rich. With the tiny bit amount of “free data transfer” that comes with the package, we’re more likely to have to pay another 99 bucks to enjoy the iPhone 3G usage.
I’ve previously done some calculation with a friend of mine from Singapore who is also using an iPhone 3G from the SingTel package. The SingTel user are only required to sign a 24 months contract with minimum commitment of SGD56 per month and paying ONLY SGD 348 for an iPhone 3G. While we Malaysians who plans on getting hold of this iPhone 3G are paying the market price for the iPhone 3G and still we’re FORCED to pay a commitment fee ranging from RM 1,200 to RM 9,000 which are bound in the Maxis contract. Is it worth it?

Still not convinced? Try reading this spreadsheet and see how much you gonna have to pay for an iPhone 3G in Malaysia if you plans to sign on these Maxis call plans rip off plans.

Update: I’ve even found this funny incident in one of my regular-visiting-gadget-blog. (Maxis trying to mislead Malaysian consumers?)
Maxis!! Why? Why the rip off?
P/S: I’m not affliated with this site but this is an option to get your iPhone 3G(if you’re desparate for it). It’s not worth the rip off!
